The Coffey Firm - Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort

Auto shop in New Orleans East.

The view out our window on the road to Chalmette, LA in St. Bernard Parrish one of the worst hit areas.

Water a couple of miles east of downtown New Orleans in a warehouse / apartment district.

Smoke over the city. If you look closely between the guardrails you can see the water in the street.

Car stalled out on I-10 by the Superdome. You can see the reflection of the water just below the dome.

Abandoned campsite on I-10 just a short distance from the Superdome.

This is a part of I-10 where the water was over the roadway. About 1 foot of water in the shallowest part on the left side of the roadway. The red pickup and the white police car are stalled out on the left. The trucks pulling boats are going around them to get to the shallow side of the flooded roadway.

This is on the road back from Chalmette, LA east of New Orleans. There was a portion of the road (2 lane highway) that was flooded for well over 150 yds, again only about 1 foot deep, but it was alot for a very weighed down truck with trail (well over 3500 lbs of food and water).

This is one of the most crazy things we came accross. If you look closely in the circle you will see that it is more fuzzy than the rest of the picture. This is due to a flaming gas leak shooting flames as high as the fireplace in the center of the picture. Needless to say there is not much left of the house. When we left on the Sunday the flames were still flaming, almost a full week after the hurricane landed. There were many gas leaks all in New Orleans East, at least 10 in the area that we worked.

Another truck stalled out on the road to Chalmette. Not many traveled in and out of there that week. The Team helped about 15 migrant workers including a baby girl get out Chalmette, most of them rode 50 miles on the back of the trailer to Baton Rouge, LA. Special thanks to Nelson for interpretation as all but one spoke only Spanish. Out of respect for the hurricane survivors, our team avoided taking pictures of individuals.

Nelson in the middle of the road on the road back from Chalmette, LA. Oh, yea that is a boat in the background, and to his right is a small trailer dolly.

Huey on I-10 between New Orleans East and New Orleans. It's really hard to believe just how big this thing really is. It's a 3 lane freeway, each way, and the blades swing over our side of the freeway.
We at The Coffey Firm wish all the survivors of Hurricane Katrina the very best. Our hearts are broken by the tremendous human suffering that has taken place during this tragedy. The city of New Orleans and the surrounding areas are very important to this country, and most of all they are the homes of our fellow Americans. Mimi was particularly heartbroken as it is one of her favorite cities to visit. |
